Annual Membership Drive

July

 

 The Annual Membership Drive begins July 1 and ends July 31.  The membership drive 

is conducted from the Literacy Council.  Staff and volunteers assist with clerical duties 

including preparation of the BCLC Update., attaching mailing labels and packaging 

of mail for bulk mailing.

Adult Spelling Bee

September

 

 To celebrate Literacy Month, BCLC holds an Annual Spell for Literacy with our adult 

spelling bee held every September.  Volunteers are needed to help pick up balloons, help 

fill participants cups, prepare refreshments, prepare sponsor signs: student center set up

and cleaning and / or volunteer to be part of a spelling team for sponsors without teams.

 

Golf Tournament

June

 This fund raising event involves participation from corporate sponsors, hole sponsors, 

volunteer bakers, registration assistance, greeters and numerous other areas.

Bucket Shake

July

 

 Bucket Shake is a fund raising event that is held for three days during July.  Volunteers 

are needed at WAL*MARTs, Lowe's Food and Food Lions throughout Brunswick County 

to request donations from shoppers.  Each volunteer is provided a bucket and candy to give 

to persons that donate to BCLC. Other duties for this event include delivering materials at 

the beginning of each day to volunteers and collecting donations and materials at the end 

of each day.

 

Brunswick Stew

February

 Brunswick Stew is a February fund raising event.  Volunteers are needed to prepare 

stew, make posters, and assist with serving and sales.

Book Share

November

 November celebrates National Children's Book Week.  Volunteers are needed to 

coordinate with participating schools, regarding dates and times for volunteer 

readers, to contact volunteers to read, and / or to volunteer to read.

Books for Babies

Year Round

 This event is in coordination with the Brunswick County Health Department.  Books 

are delivered to the health department and children are read to as they wait.  

Volunteers are needed to collect books, deliver books and to read to the children.

Get the Scoop

on Literacy

 Fund raising event in which local ice cream merchants donate a percentage of ice cream 

sales to the Literacy Council.  Help is needed with delivery of posters, poster collection 

and donation collection.

Holiday Book Share

Nov.-Dec.

 

 

 Holiday Book Share, held in coordination with Brunswick Family Assistance, begins

 in November and runs through December.  This event gives books to children for 

Christmas.  Volunteers are needed to make posters get boxes, sort books, 

and place into BCFA baskets, deliver boxes to churches and to pick up boxes 

at the conclusion of the project.

 

Tutors

Year Round

 

 

 Our primary focus is to encourage volunteers to serve as tutors for BCLC students. 

Tutors attend free training sessions offered throughout the year at the Literacy council 

in Supply, NC.  Once trained, tutors are partnered with a student or students to begin 

helping these students enhance their lives through improved reading, writing, 

math and English-speaking skills.

 

Tutor Talk

 This event is an opportunity for tutors to meet and share ideas, for tutor recognition 

and in general to have a good time.

United Way

 Volunteers are needed to attend fairs at various locations and man the BCLC public 

relations table and serve as a representative of BCLC.

Other Volunteer

Areas

 

 

 

Volunteers are needed to serve on various committees that are lead by BCLC's Board 

of  Directors and / or to consider serving on the Board of Directors.

 

The BCLC Library is in need of re-organization with a table of contents.  Volunteers are 

needed for this project as well as periodic organization.

 

Clerical assistance is needed in organizing files for dissolved students and tutors.

 

Help update student and tutor cards on a monthly basis.

 

Always needed are volunteers to bake items for various events.

 

Several volunteers are needed to man the BCLC public relations table at various 

partner agency events and serve as a representative of BCLC.

 

Assist BCLC Board Members and staff with Literacy Council Clean Up Day.
